Vaalvlei Frogs

When we settled in Stanford in 2005 we were amazed at how many different frogs one could hear on our farm. So far we have identified 12 species.

Western Leopard Toad
(Amietophrynus pantherinus)
Our logo on our Vaalvlei wine bottle is The Western Leopard Toad and this what it looks like. The endangered Western Leopard Toad only occurs in the Cape Peninsula and the Hermanus, Agullas area. We have a small population in the Stanford area and Vaalvlei Farm is the furthest point from the sea that this toad has ever been identified (17km). They prefer the sandy areas near the coast.
